Lake Manyara is one of the biosphere reserves in the world. It is one of the smallest and most diverse national park. With a more intimate view of the African outdoors. The park is a host for tree climbing lions, hippos, elephants and a huge array of birdlife including tens of thousands of flamingoes.

Ernest Heming way described Manyara and said that “the loveliest I had seen in Africa” stretching for 50 km along the base of the rusty gold 600 metre high rift valley escarpment, lake Manyara is a scienic germ.

From the entrance gate, the road winds through an expense of lush jungle like ground water forest where hundred strong baboon troops lounge is a calm and relaxed way along the road side, blue monkeys move quickly with short hight steps between the ancient Mahogany trees, careful bush buck tread warily through the shadows and outsized forest hornbills honk cacophonously is the high canopy.

Contrasting with the intimacy of the forest is the grassy flood plain and covering a large amount of space eastward, across the alkaline lake, to the jagged blue volcanic peaks that rise from the endless Maasai steppes. Largebuffalo, wild beest and zebra herds congregate on these grassy plains, as do giraffes-some so dark in color that they appear to be black from far.

In land of the flood plain, a narrow belt of acacia wood land is the favoured haunt of Manyara’s legendary tree-climbing lions and impressively tusked elephants. Squadrons of banded mangoose move suddenly and quickly between the acacias, while the very small kirks-dik-dik search for food in their shade. Pairs of klipspringer’s shadows are normally seen on the rocks above a field of searing not springs that streams and bubbles adjacent to the lakeshore in the far south of the park.
Wildlife and Birding
Manyara offers a very good introduction to the bird life in Tanzania. 400 species and above, have been recorded, and even still, 100 of these might by a first time vistor to Africa. In 1957, lake Manyara National park was proclaimed a game reserve, and three years later, it was registered as a National park. The park which is located between the 600m high escarpment of the Great Rift valley and lake Manyara, and 130km from Arusha, encompasses an area of 330 sq. km of which 200sq km is lake.
